A record of my progress for a Dungeons and Dragons based animatic project made with my group for the Lab II unit at JMC Academy.

2/3 BI is an animatic project developed by myself and two other design students, Alexandra Rowland and Hayden Richards. We aimed to create a funny fantasy adventure story in a fantasy world, with a comedic reveal at the end.

Here is my initial conceptualisation of the characters using shapes as a basis to add range between the characters in appearance and personality. Named Bogus, Bunce and Bean at first, we had randomised our character's species and classes with a (digital) dice in good old D&D fashion when first ideating and then changed some things around to have our characters be more relevant to ourselves.

After finalising our character designs, I proceeded to draw character sheets for them. The first set is the finalised designs for the actual animatic, whereas the second set is concept colour palettes for each character. I tried to go for a contrast between all three when it comes down to their colours, i.e. dark tone with red, middle tone with yellow, light tone with blue.

One of our first ideas when working on this project was the thought of including subtle D&D references in the background of the landscape and different environments throughout the animatic. So here I ideated one of those ideas where a D20 dice is visible in the background. I drew two versions, one with the dice in the sun and another with it as part of the mountains our characters could've potentially been walking towards.

This is the storyboard for the first half of our animatic that I was given to finalise into frames. The storyboard was drawn by Alexandra Rowland.

Above are all 42 frames that I've created for the animatic. I took on the first half, starting at the introductory tavern scene and ending at Kerylift's reveal. Alex and I both tried to maintain a level of consistency in tones, colour and artstyle through the transition from my half to theirs.
