Madoka Magica Tarot Cards personal project

I started this project as an homage to my favourite show. The depth of this show made a perfect match for many of the cards' meanings, and I had a creative vision that I was set on realising. It's still a work in progress, but someday I aim to complete a set of the Major Arcana, so look out for updates!

Update - 19 Apr 2023

Madokami, or Ultimate Madoka, perfectly represents the wholeness of "The World" card in her final move of becoming the Law of the Cycles. I just had to incorporate the famous Mucha-esque swirls in her hair!

"The Devil" card was an obvious, albeit slightly indulgent, pick for Homucifer/Demon Homura! Perhaps it's a little too on the nose, but I thought it would be a nice touch to not-so-subtly nod to Alexandre Cabanel's Fallen Angel for this piece. Once again, I prominently displayed Mucha's swirl patterns in the hair in a direct but opposite parallel to The World card.

Kyoko and Sayaka were also an indulgent and obvious pick for this one, though I believe they also represent the virtues of choices, sacrifice, and change in life and relationships given their joint arcs both in the main series and the Rebellion film. I made a church stained glass style motif as symbolism from the show, as well as a way to centre the characters and emulate some of Mucha's more detailed patterns.

Mami Tomoe is the ultimate figurehead for Justice! This piece takes on a more asymmetrical approach reminiscent of art nouveau pieces and I took inspiration from some of the more relaxed poses of the figures in Mucha's work.

"The Tower" is often associated with total destruction and danger, and Walpurgisnacht represented all of those things. Sometimes, it can also represent liberation too - Walpurgisnacht technically did bring about the conditions to offer the ultimate liberation in the end! This piece is a little different than my others as I wanted to emulate some of the scenes preceding the battle in the final episodes. I used brushes with texture to reproduce the unique collage-like feel of the witch designs in the show.
