"A Little Closer to the Stars"_Disney Art Challenge 2022 Entry

My entry for the Disney art challenge of 2022. The prompt was "A little closer to the stars". Overall tried to match the Disney style and level of a 3D film rendering but in 2D.

As I have wanted to spend as much time as possible working on the final image I have spent just about 4 hours designing this set of characters.

After I have completed the final artwork I decided to develop the characters and the universe a bit more.  I imagined that depending on what action the character was performing he would morph and look more like the animal that suited the most for that task.

The character is a fallen star. In its star/space form it is a dragon as displayed in the image here.

As soon as the character hit the earth his dragon form fell into pieces, each represented by an animal and a human. In the course of the story, the character tries to regain his dragon form, however, it might not be what he should be aiming for.

For the animals, I took inspiration from the fauna of the tundra in eastern Asia, and the endangered and vulnerable species of the region, such as the Pallas cat, Dhole wolf, and Moon bear. I have also explored how the presence of a fallen star each animal would have marks appear on their body.

This is the second set of characters that I have spent approximately 4 hours on. In the end, I decided to go with the other idea for the final work. This second idea was about a girl from a Buryat tribe at the frozen lake Baikal where the stars would reflect off the ice and the girl would ride this creature reaching for that reflection. The creature was a mix of a black stork, shrimp, and a longhorn beetle, all inhabiting the region that I was inspired by for this story.
