Bad Bunz

A recreation of one of my vector characters into 3D! She's always causing a lot of trouble behind her high school. This was my first major piece I created after learning the fundamentals of Blender. Took around 20+ hours to finish. Creating this piece gave me a wealth of knowledge in terms of how to use Blender.

After learning the fundamentals of blender, the first thing I wanted to try recreating in 3D was my original character "Bad Bunny Girl", inspired by "yanki" Japanese school girls (They are basically like the rebels of the schoolyard). I liked the juxposition of this cute ("kawaii") looking bunny character, actually being a big rebel who is the type to fight you over something she THOUGHT she heard you say. The design is simple enough, so I thought I would start with just the base model and clothes.

I quickly did a reference image for my character in Adobe Illustrator, and went to work on bringing her to life! But unfortunately...

She looks like shit...HAH!  I majorly messed up on MANY parts. I didn't fully understand how UV mapping worked nor did I have a clear vision of how I wanted to stage/light the character (Did I want it to feel edgy? Cute? Etc.). I was so upset with how it turned out I completely scrapped the UV map and tried again.

What a BIG improvement. I figured out why my UV map came out so pixelated before and was able to redo the face. I added a small gradient to the shirt and added a few more flourishes to give the character more depth and life. I also opted to keep with the same colour scheme of the character for the background, adding 3-point lighting and trying to go for a more soft pastel look.

After feeling very accomplished for recreating my character to my satisfaction, I still didn't feel she was complete yet. She needed her backpack! I used the above photos for reference.

And here is my second model! Instead of just recreating the bag, I wanted to add a bit more of Bad Bunny Girl's character to it. Looking back on this project it's quite rough in a few spots but it was a good practice on making objects with some strange shapes and learning how to apply different materials to different objects.

At long last, she is finally completed! I added the backpack to the character file and fixed the lighting and colours. Even though I'm still a beginner, I'm proud of what I produced here and fixed along the way. I'm so glad I didn't just settle on a shit product, and reworked it into it actually looked good!
