Attempt at creating a bust, no likeness intended

by Harrison on 22 Jan 2022

My first attempt at creating a head bust. This project was created with purely procedural materials which was a personal challenge. This includes no image textures for masking regions of the face and instead, using edge masks to determine areas such as the lip region. Is not intended to be photorealistic.

An overlook of the material that I created for his skin. As stated in the description, all details on his skin are fully procedural, including zoning out where his mouth is and using edge masks to texture his lips. I created my first human head like this as I wanted to challenge myself and practice using procedural materials outside of environment-based art.

As it is the most complex part of the texture, I have decided to do a small breakdown of how the lip mask works.
Step 1: create a basic rectangle mask around the whole lip
Step 2 and 3:use a basic edge mask to find areas of contrast and isolate them using math nodes
Step 4: use the alpha mask made to drive the colour and roughness of the lips
