We Learnt For Nothing

by jheinemann on 4 Sep 2021

The Chernobyl Disaster of 1986 inspired my final idea as it had the potential to look gorgeous with textures and flora but also hold history in it. I aimed to replicate said classroom from Chernobyl and believe I successfully created this space through my texturing and layout design.

Report:

The beginning phase of this project was all about exploring ideas and deciding on what would best suit my strengths and interests to submit a polished piece of assessment. Knowing I wanted to model an environment, I brainstormed possibilities such as landscapes, biomes and infrastructure. The Chernobyl Disaster of 1986 inspired my final idea as it had the potential to look gorgeous with textures and flora but also hold history in it. I aimed to replicate said classroom from Chernobyl as I wanted to challenge myself with a medium sized, detailed space. The title We Learnt for Nothing came about after researching the event and the fallout that occurred to the children who learnt in Chernobyl, more specifically Pripyat.

One of my first problems was that of modelling my cupboard. I remodelled it three times and had to fix massive n-gon issues. I eventually simplified the model and made the shelving separate. Major problems were in relation to texturing the light, desk and chair. These were my first models textured so I was still learning the basics of Substance Painter. I received feedback that my models were too bumpy and wet (see Production Meeting Minutes below) and I needed to look closer at references and should seek a tutorial on peeling paint or talk to Mark.

My successes started with modelling my assets (ceiling light, desk, chair, blackboard, cupboard, door and hinges and later modelled windows) and I was happy with how they all turned out. I was confident with my Maya skills to begin with thanks to my other classes but I still have lots to learn. Correctly exporting files and importing them with the correct resolution and settings into Substance Painter took a few attempts. Eventually I learnt the workflow but it took a few mistakes and research. The area with my most success was that of texturing (I mean it also had many fails but I smiled the most here at what I had achieved). The final stage was learning Unity and applying repeating textures and adjusting the lighting in the environment to look natural. I also had to seek help with applying character control in Unity, which was the final addition that completed my project. Overall, it turned out great and these successes are what made it worthwhile.

Throughout the project’s process, it was full of challenges, successes and experiences such as learning software, techniques to get the most realistic look, taking on constructive feedback and retexturing certain assets with the knowledge I had gained over time. I spent much time re-watching YouTube tutorials for modelling and texturing and got feedback and tips from both Martin and classmates whenever I could which really excelled my knowledge. All my assets turned out realistic and I am extremely happy with my final scene.
