A living room with perspective.

The Mindmap

This project is all about the perspective of a living room, compleated with light, shadows and textures. The room is based on a non-existent character of an also non-existent fictional universe, so any similarities with real people or locations are purely coincidental.

The first step is to define the character using a mind map.

The actual Map

After this, we make a concept map of the room so we can locate all the main objects. I decided to go with grid, but this is not necesary.

This is the side view.

And this is the top view.

The Boxes

After we've set the scene, it's time to start throwing lines. Decide where the focus points will be and make the 2 walls of the room. Then, using the map from before we have to make 3 dimensional boxes of each of the main objects.

It should look something like this.

The Moodboard

Now for the actual artistic part, each box is gonna need to have a piece of furniture inside following the perspective we've already set.

My personal preference is is to mix and match parts from diferent objects, but making one from scratch or using an existing one in its entirety is also fine.

The Drawing

When drawing the furniture, specially if you are making it yourself, is best to put each one on separate layers in order to avoid later problems. That way you can always swap, change or remove something if it doesn't fit at a later point.

The Color Palette

Once the drawing is finished and we're happy with the result, we have to decide on a color palette for the room.

I made a monochromatic palette based on browns and tried 3 different combinations of it. You can make as many as you want to, with as many palettes as you need.

This is the first try.

The second.

And the third.

I actually wanted to go with the first one, but I kept fiddling with the details of the second (you can probably see right away it has a more finished look) and I finally went with it.

The Details

Now for the main event. After many hours changing, deleting, redrawing, and throwing so many light and pespective lines that it all looked like a red blot, this is how it turned out.

It may not be an award winning masterpiece, but I'm satisfied on how it looks.
