Quick study and experiment I did for composition and atmosphere. Got really excited after seeing Quixel's Rebirth trailer and started to look at Quixel's capabilities when it comes to creating environments, lets just say I was more than impressed! :D

For assets I used some of Quixel's free textures and meshes and some of Unreal's as well, also created a few textures in Substance Painter. Had a lot of fun learning and doing the material blueprints to be able to blend layers in the landscape and bring out the textures with tessellation (the tessellation would only act within a radius around the character so it wouldn't slow down the level). For references I looked at mostly volcanic beaches and rocky beaches.

This is how it started, some random ideas with some wacky thumbnails. At first I thought of adding some vegetation, but I decided to go for a monochrome look for the colour palette, having only sand, rocks and sea as the main visual elements.
