Games and cinematics - 2021 work
This submission is a collection of all my work done starting from January with finished (short film) and yet unfinished projects (game). At the end of the last year I decided to focus more on developing my skills inside of Unreal with additional software and here you can see my several months progress.
The first smell of spring - short film
My very first completed concept trailer rendered in most shots with Unreal and edited in DaVinci Resolve. It was also great challenge for me to understand, adapt real-time engine to creating cinematics and combine rendered sequences with prepared footage.
Plot and concept development
At the beginning I had an initial idea for a short film that story takes place in near future with robotic characters. For early concepts I used Unreal with After Effects and free assets to find interesting style. The coolest part here was setting up scenes and figuring out what really reflects my ideas.
Storyboard and layout
Shortly afterwards I decided to keep the first character but whole concept became focused more on aircraft and main place of action moved to airport. After that the whole thing began to clarify and despite further changes I knew what I wanted to achive at the end.
Compositing
This part was of course focused on combining additional footage with rendered sequences. Here you can see how I transformed character into hologram and how he was merged with "clean plate".
Look development and modeling
I also knew that making every single model with limited time would be impossible so I took method of small steps by making simple (and most important model) for main character in Maya with additional adjusting of free texture sample for helmet inside of UE (adding roughness, normal maps etc.)
Landscapes
For specific shots I created mountain landscapes and played a bit with different fog setting to achieve desirable effect.
Unrealstein: Prologue - PC game
My second project, modern remaster of Wolfenstein 3D, is far from completion but I'm pretty happy with the achieved results so far. To date I made a couple of 3D models and I finally developed method of transforming original 2D textures with Photoshop and Quixel Mixer which was the most challenging thing for me at the time.
3D models
Main goal was as always with this kind of project to transform original things into modern environment. It was actually very interesting to remake them because every single object has specific needs.
Textures
As I wrote before, for a long time I tried to find an easier and more efficient way to convert surface textures from original to fit more modern look. I created various textures in Photoshop (normal, roughness, displacement maps etc.) and later combined them in Mixer which resulted in pleasing to the eye effect.
A few words about me
I'm a third-year student at Warsaw University of Technology and avid fan of widely understood visual effects and games. My diploma thesis is focused on using Unreal Engine to create visualizations of spatial development plans made in BIM technology. In my spare time I try to learn new things connected with compositing, previsualization, level design and every potentially interesting field. Apart from digital things, I mostly enjoy basketball, track&field and ski jumping.
