The Red Heel
A midcentury comedy about misogyny in the workforce, created as my senior film at Ringling College of Art and Design.
The Red Heel
The Red Heel is a midcentury comedy about misogyny in the workforce, inspired by the style of the UPA animation of the 50s!
Characters
Designing these characters was a unique challenge, as it translated a wildly 2D concept into a 3D space. H.R. Guy went under a complete redesign during the modelling process, so that he'd exude testosterone and fraternity energy.
Both Suzy and H.R. Guy have camera locked textures on their clothing. The effect was made using a mixed shader combing an aiToon and aiStandardSurface Shader, and used a light mask to determine the texture's area of influence.
Set
All of the textures in The Red Heel are hand drawn on paper and formated through Photoshop. Keeping textures organic was pivotal to the final look of the film, and creating seamless tiles allowed texturing to be more efficient. The film relied on alpha cards for all the linework, grunge, and detail effects.
