MEMENTO, THE OPENING CREDITS

SCREENCAPS FROM THE MOVIE

NARRATIVE CONCEPT & EXPLANATIONS
In the style of Christopher Nolan, I decided to told the story in two different timelines: one in color, the other in black and white. In the color shots, we follow Leonard Shelby's daily life through details that help him situate himself in an unfamiliar environment, like memory triggers, while the black-and-white shots are essentially car-related (different framings of different cars). They are the common thread that introduces each of the color shots, like an echo.

OPENING SCENE & EXPLANATIONS
This opening scene puts us straight into the film's disturbing cyclical mood, not only with its colors but also with the idea of multiple doors, perhaps all of which we've already been through, with no memory of it.

SCENE & EXPLANATIONS
The theme of the car evokes the character's endless, futile quest. It suggests that the character starts his search over and over again, and when he does manage to find the culprit, he suppresses his own memories (material memories in the form of the polaroids he takes) and starts again from the beginning, distorting the information he thinks he has (which he won't remember.) In particular, he changes cars. As the end of the film is open-ended, it leaves us with the idea that this isn't the first time he's repeated the same scenario, hence the idea of different car shots.

SCENE & EXPLANATIONS
At the end of the credits, we see the very first black-and-white scene worked with a double exposure in color. This sequence illustrates the two temporalities trying to correspond, succeeding at one moment but separating the next. I used this first scene in black and white to maintain the idea of an impassable loop.
