Kim Ga Young- Animation Reel

Observation skills are vital for animators to create lifelike movements. When I work on body mechanics, I gather about 280 references and analyze them to identify the right gestures, facial expressions, and timing. From there, I select the most suitable references to guide my work, allowing me to enhance my observation skills.

When it comes to assembling my demo reel, I pay close attention to the screen layout to keep viewers engaged. I arrange the scenes in order of significance and ensure that the visuals are captivating, aiming to make the demo reel as appealing as possible.

Facial - 'The daily life of a father and daughter'

The father, who wrote a romantic letter to his wife on Valentine's Day, is full of pride and excitement. He eagerly shows his letter to his daughter, brimming with enthusiasm. However, in his eagerness, his overly dramatic gestures and exaggerated expressions hint at a slightly awkward and over-the-top demeanor. I wanted to capture this unique mix of excitement and awkwardness through detailed facial expressions and body mechanics, highlighting the father's energetic but somewhat goofy charm.

Jump - 'Exploration of Dungeon'

I created a character who explores dungeons filled with hazardous traps and obstacles. To enhance the range of movement, I implemented actions beyond simple jumps and rotations. I introduced a special maneuver where the character can quickly escape danger by pressing a button and leaping, allowing for a variety of dynamic and visually interesting animations. This added layer of agility not only made gameplay more engaging but also provided an opportunity to embody a diverse set of moves and animations for the character.

Weight - 'Cell phone battery runs out'

The concept revolves around a battery manager responsible for maintaining battery health without causing excessive wear and tear. To illustrate this, I used an animation where the character physically pulls a rapidly shrinking battery, emphasizing the burden and strain that comes with managing battery life. This imagery was designed to convey the weighty responsibility and effort involved in preserving battery longevity.

Walking / Running Animation

I took a key pose and structured the motion to ensure it transitioned smoothly during the spline stage, while also incorporating additional details to enhance the animation's realism. This approach allowed me to create a seamless flow between keyframes, capturing the subtleties and nuances that bring the scene to life. By refining the movement at the spline stage, I aimed to achieve a more polished and natural animation.

Body mechanic - 'An overambitious disaster'

It's a story that reflects my love for delicious food through a character. In it, a girl who absolutely adores eating comes home and eagerly starts piling heaps of delicious food onto the table. As she adds more and more, her excitement grows—but so does the weight on the table. Eventually, the table collapses under the sheer amount of food she's brought, leading to a funny and unexpected twist.
