The Art of Culinary Layering

Project Brief

To design a fine dining restaurant space, for Cielo KL, at Lot P02-2, Bamboo Hills, Segambut, 51200 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur.

The design intention of this fine dining restaurant space is to create a space with both formal yet modern retro environment by implement multiracial elements.

This can be achieve by proposing inspired ceiling design, ambient lighting, material selection, selection of color scheme to create ambient and atmosphere and also furniture selection to provide a memorable dining experience.

Client Brief

The client of this design project is Cielo Fine Dining and Bar KL. Cielo Fine Dining and Bar is owned by Werner Kuhn. This restaurant is opened in April 2018. It is located at level 23 VIDA Bukit Ceylon. They serve classic European dishes with a modern twist. There is also a wine cellar that store the wine from 170 countries around the world. The restaurant can fit in 150 of people at the same time. The most attractive point of this restaurant is the customers can enjoy the panoramic view from rooftop.

Concept Statement

Keyword: Joining & Layering

The design concept is inspired by their signature fine dining starter. Its name is Trio of Angus Beef Tataki, Lubina Ceviche, and Gallagher Oyster. The dishes are combined from three different countries' cuisines which are Spanish, Ireland and Japanese. The keyword joining represents one of the purposes Werner opened the restaurant. It contributes to the cultural exchange between the customers and helps to promote global culinary traditions.

The keyword layering represents the fine dining experience which is the part Cielo KL also emphasizes. Werner also controls the layering of flavors and textures to create complex but harmonious dishes like their signature starter dishes. The joining and layering pattern can be utilized in ceiling design, lighting design, and space planning. Through the inspiration, it can be utilized in the interior of the restaurant to provide a space for the customer to have an unforgettable dining experience like their branding quotes --- the ultimate dining experience like no other.
