Let's start

Hi everyone! I'm José Barreiro and I am 3D Character Artist.

This is my entry for "The Rookie Awards 2024". This are all of the pieces I have made during the master at Animum Creativity Advanced School.

I would never have thought that I would be making 3D characters but after a year and a half, here I'm in this incredible world! Hope you like it, and I apologize in advance because it may be a bit long! :D


Moon Guardian – Vfx Character

This Project was made during my masters Degree, it was the first time I made a creature and learned a lot, still got a long way but the journey is just beginning! Love sculpting and texturing this creature, the concept art was created by the amazing Hardy Fowler.

I will show some of the steps I made for this project. :D

This Project was Sculpted in Zbrush, Texture in Substance Painter, hair was made in Xgen and rendered in Arnold Maya.

In the following images you can see the details of the sculpting in Zbrush before going to Substance painter to start the texturing!

After Baking and all the process of texturing in substance, These are some of the maps I made for it, I tried to make it as realistic as I could, it was a quite interesting process and I am very grateful to my tutors for everything they taught me!

And now a couple of renders showing more closely the details that were made for the Moon Guardian!

Here is the Original 2D concept made by Hardy Fowler, I changed the horns to give a little more contrast and variation of color to the character but I love this concept!

Susan The Witch – Cartoon Character

This is Susan the witch my Cartoon project made at the Master. I really enjoy all the process behind the Cartoon workflow, it was the first time creating an Stylized Character and loved every minute of it!

It's based on the awesome concept art by Penpen gao, just one look and made me want to  try and sculpt it.

A couple of close up renders showing the details of Susan, pose A or 45º of the character and the topology!

This Project was Sculpted and pose in Zbrush, Texture in Substance Painter and finally rendered in Arnold Maya.

and next is the Original 2D concept made by Penpen Gao, an incredible artist!

Estelle The Jade Knight – Videogames Character

Here is the last character created at the master from the character artist part, a realtime Character, Estelle the Jade Knight. It was great to learn this new workflow and next techniques. 

It's based on the concept art by Cai Lei.

The high poly was sculpt in ZBrush, textured with Substance Painter and render on Marmoset Toolbag 4.

This character has 55k triangles including the hair!

Anatomy Study

In this section im gonna group up some of the projects involving anatomy, muscles, humans races.

First we gonna go with a Human for learning anatomy and topology!

Later we separated the head from the body to work on the details of the skin in zbrush. (Imperfections, pores, scars)

We also work in a couple of expressions and the muscles in them.

the next step was texturing the head of the human, it one of my favorite parts of the process! :D

And I did the same process but with an African American! but Gonna show the final result so that we dont take to long haha! 

Its base on Jonathan Majors.

Other projects worth mentioning

A quick character made for Halloween, the spooky season!

I want it to create a character in a limited time to see how it goes!

The concept was made by Tubik.

and this cool girl!

I saw Lucas Peinador's How to Render class and I loved it, I decided to make a model of this character from the class! (Recommend to check it out)

This was my first time speed sculting, it took me around 2 hours to sculpt it and then texturing took around 3 hours.

Learn a lot by doing it this way!

and the second part of the master at animum was lighting scenes, so next is gonna be the reel of my lighting projects!
