Here is my Show Reel after two years at the ESMA of Nantes, France ! In this entry, I will show you two of my school works that required me to handle multiple softwares and competences, and I will guide you through the process of each piece, from the preproduction phase to its finalisation one !

Spiderpunk's Room

First is the end result of my 1st year's vacation homework at the ESMA ! We had to make a hero's entrance, and I chose to make Spiderpunk's one ! I wanted to show the fact that he invites friends over to his place (for example Gwen in ATSV), and I focused on this idea to make his room some sort of a "headquarter" for the friends he has in his universe or even beyond !

Even though I already posted it in the past, I never explained the process behind it and I have so many things to explain about it that this show reel is an excellent occasion to do so and show you my thought process and challenges behind thoses

Now, I will guide you through the preproduction part of my work :

First step for me was to dump my earliest ideas out of my brain in every ways I could : sketches, moodboard, fanarts...

I am a big fan of the Punk subculture, and seeing the character of SpiderPunk on a screen inspired me a lot to create, and having to imagine a whole room for class was the perfect opportunity for me to have fun and at the same time make an even bigger project on a subject I really like.

After these draft ideas, I fleshed out a better sketch in order to guide my ideas in a more "refined way".

Since we had to do the final 3D environment in two versions : one during the day and one during the night, I made alternatives version of the same drawing, to indicate the general idea and tone of it.

The researches were coming to an end at ths point, when I was looking for more direct references : furniture, decorations, and, of course ways to hint at my character, whether with his tastes, personnality or with elements directly linked to the movie Spiderman : Across the Spiderverse.

Stricking examples are his guitar, the portrait he has in his room (see the left up corner of the picture) or of course Gwen's shoes. Other examples, more subtes but still representative of this character are music discs and posters, for which I chose to use punk (or rock leaning for some) bands, and it was really fun for me to kind of "share" my music taste to an extent, since I'm really into punk and rock music.

Now that this research phase has been done, I could finally go onto the production phase :

And to illustrate what my process looks like, I will use the example of Spiderpunk's guitar, since it was definitely my favorite to create in 3D and also one of his most stricking symbol in the movie.

For this instrument, I had to figure out which guitar to chose, since the style of the Spiderverse movies are pretty stylised and my restriction for this school work was to be realistic.

So I chose to make an Epiphone Les Paul guitar, that I found to be the closest guitar to the one Hobie uses. I used as a reference the art Jake Panian made for the movie for Spiderpunk's appearance and most impotantly his guitar (instrument and stickers)

And after all of my objects are done following those same steps, I could finally arrange them in my final scene following my preproduction drawings and my liking !

And here is the final result ! (day/night)

Microcosmos

The goal of this work was to create a small video of an imaginary insect and its environment, starting from its preproduction to the video's compositing.

Production

The first step of this project was creating the creature :

After doing some researches about insects in general, we had to assemble our very own, and then modelling and shading it in 3D (here, on maya with Renderman)

In the videos, the insect and the light are turning, to check if the insect is correctly receiving the light in every angle, since it will be animated while moving around in my scene later.

Then, it was time to rig it for this insect to be able to be maneuvered correctly in my scene as I wished.

Here is what is called a "gymnastic test" (or "torture test"); a video showing all the capacities of my rig.

Thanks to this rig, we can continue with my favorite step of this project : the animation !

I think that the challenging part was understanding how an insect walk (the rythm of its steps), in order to be accurate, even if it is not a real creature.

And finally, with the insect and its environment created, comes the last part, the compositing, which englobes all the light/color corrections, and special effects added later to make the whole piece more realistic and pretty.

The environment looks really blurry, but it was intentional since the point of the work was to replicate a microcosmos kind of video, and these ones are really focused on the insect, leaving the rest blurred out

final video [sound on !]

Softwares used : Zbrush / Maya / Renderman / Nuke / Adobe Substance Painter / Adobe Substance Designer

And to end this presentation, here is my Demo Reel !

I am a 2nd year student in 3D at the ESMA of Nantes, France, and I am looking for an 8 weeks internship between June 20th and September 5th of 2024. I am motivated to discover new domains and integrate a professional team in order to assimilate new abilities in every areas of 3D, whether in animation, rigging, lighting, 3D modeling, compositing or pre-production.
