Self-Portrait

This portrait was inspired by 60s psychedelic rock poster art, and one artist which inspired the style I went with for this piece was Wes Wilson. This is definitely one of my more experimental artworks as I used an entirely different style and choice of colours than I usually do, but I was really happy with how it came out and it's easily one of my favourite artworks that I've created. This piece is representative of how my head is always brimming with thoughts and imagination, hence why it's exploding.

To create this artwork, I first pulled up some of Wes Wilson's artworks for inspiration and made some planning sketches. Once I found a design I was happy with, I got a picture of my face and used a pencil to sketch it out onto a board. I then filled in the major blocks of colour with paint and then used a black paint pen for the line art and a white paint pen for the highlights.

The Elric Brothers from Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is my favourite anime, and since I love the two main characters so much, I wanted to make an artwork of them.

To make this artwork, I pulled up references of the characters and sketched up a pose, breaking down the forms into simple shapes like triangles. After I was happy with the poses, I lightly erased the lines and drew up the main drawing on top, inked it with black pens and fineliners, erased the pencil underneath and coloured the characters in with alcohol based markers and coloured pencils for the background.

If I were to redraw this piece, next time I would pay more attention to the proportions and shadows in the earlier stages of the process before inking so I can correct things that don't look right, because after finishing this artwork, I can see some small things here and there that look a bit off.

The Strawhat Crew from One Piece

One Piece is currently another favourite anime of mine and like Fullmetal Alchemist, I also found the cast of characters very endearing, so I wanted to make artworks of each of the original five members of the Stawhat Crew.

With most of my artworks, the process is very similar, where I find references, draw a pose with simple shapes, draw the main drawing, ink it, then colour it in with alcohol markers.

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

I am still relatively new to digital art, and I'm not as good at it yet as I am with traditional, but this was the first digital artwork of mine that I'm actually quite happy with, despite some imperfections. I created this artwork in Adobe Photoshop, making sure to use a different layer for each step of the process, and something I really like about digital art is the unlimited access to colours compared to traditional art where my colour choices are limited.

Oiled up Man

I made this when studying realism, which was something I didn't think I would enjoy, but I did and it's because of realism, that my own art style has improved so much. I of course looked at a reference when creating this and the principles of breaking down the form into simple shapes still applied. I made this piece using mostly charcoal, and some eraser here and there for highlights. My art teacher at the time made a joke saying that he looked like an oiled up man and from then it stuck, so I named the artwork after that joke.

The Batman

This was something I made for my uncle since he is a huge Batman fan and so am I. Like all my other drawings, the same process applied. With my references I tried to find artworks from actual comic artists who are most known for doing Batman comics like Jim Lee and David Finch. Although most of my artworks consist of a style that is blend of Manga and Comic style, I tried to lean further into the comic side of my style.

This was a piece that I made quite a few months ago but if I were to re do it, like the Fullmetal Alchemist one, I would make sure to look over everything before using any ink so I can correct the proportions and lighting.
