Fencer

by chelseamaron on 10 Mar 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Fencer character created for my mentorship project at Think Tank Training Centre online. It was based on the concept "Fencer" by Craig Matchett (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/OmmX6b).

Reference Board

I found real life references to capture different details in the concept and also combined elements in different references for inspiration.

Blocking out

First I made sure the body of my character had the desired proportions and then I used Marvelous Designer to block out the clothing so that silhouette of the character could start to form.

Then I used a combination of Zbrush and Maya to add the other elements of the character working between the two programs to get the desired outcome.  Once everything was looking how I wanted I added details in Zbrush.

Retopology and UVs

Once I had everything I spent time to make sure my topology and UVs were right.  I wanted to make sure that my UVs and topology were good so that detailing and texturing would be easier.

Skin Details

I added skin details to the face and hands of the character using by projecting details from a texturingxyz asset in Mudbox.  I cleaned this up in Zbrush and added similar details to the rest of the visible parts of the character's body.

Texturing

I used Substance Painter to texture my character using a combination of procedural tools and hand painting.

Hair

I used hair cards for the character's hair and eyelashes and used texturing for the eyebrows as they are mainly hidden by the character's fringe.  I spent time placing my cards in layers and overlapping in clumps to try to mask the individual cards' edges.

Rendering

I rendered the character in Unreal Engine 5 where I created a scene for the character.

I would like to thank my supervisors and classmates at Think Tank.  I especially wanted to thank my mentor Babak Bina for the feedback and advice he gave during this project.
