Alex Bush's Entry - The Rookies 2024

Hello, my name is Alex Bush. I am a graduate who has been working on my art portfolio in the free time.  I thought entering The Rookies would be good to showcase what I have done in the past few months. Been proactively improving my art fundamentals and creating 3D art for enjoyment.

Kuka Robotic Arm - Game Ready Asset

I went to the 'Develop:Brighton' game conference in July 2023, where I took on board constructive feedback from a games recruiter. I was recommended to do a mechanical robotic arm to improve my texturing skills. By proactively improving my skills while I was unemployed, I was trying to reach a higher quality bar for creating 3D games asset. I wanted to showcase my hard surface modelling skills, being able to focus on getting the scale and proportions correctly. Gathered lots of robotic arm references and put it into PureRef before starting the project. By having lots of reference images to look at, this helped me later on when I focused on improving my texturing skills. I also had to make sure that my 3D game ready asset was not too high in terms of triangle count. Did research into how hydraulic robotic arms worked and the way they functioned for industrial purposes. The blueprint I found online was for the Kuka 500-2 robotic arm. Credit goes to Kuka for the manufacturing side of the creation of real life robotic arms.

British Challenger 2 Tank - Game Ready Vehicle

I wanted to showcase my hard surface modelling skills, being able to focus on getting the scale and proportions correctly. Gathered lots of British Challenger 2 tank references and put it into PureRef before starting the project. By having lots of reference images for the tank, this helped me later on when I focused on improving my texturing skills. I also had to make sure that my 3D game ready asset was not too high in terms of triangle count. I enjoyed creating this tank asset because I was able to push my practical skills further and I am proud of what I have achieved out of it.

WWF Smackdown Arena (Fanart)

WWF Smackdown Arena (Fanart) - Modular Environment Art

What inspired me to do this environment art was being able to go to Birmingham to watch WWE wrestling live in person. I really enjoyed playing the WWE 2K video games and the Smackdown Vs. Raw video games series.

This environment art piece took me roughly a couple of weeks to do as I was focusing on my time management and making sure I was creating 3D assets efficiently. I tried to make a WWF Smackdown arena that was inspired by the original wrestling arenas in the late 90s'. That is why I provided an original reference of the front entrance for inspiration purposes.

WWF Raw is War Arena (Fanart)

I wanted to show the WWF Raw is War Arena as another modular environment art piece I worked on. The idea was to use existing assets I made from my previous wrestling arena I made in Unreal Engine. Change the front entrance so that it creates efficiency for making multiple game levels in game production situation. This is useful for time management purposes when creating environment art pieces from scratch. By showing my enthusiasm towards creating 3D environment art, it helps me enjoy the art process as an artist.

Vintage Hand Drill - Texturing Project - Self Improvement

Vintage Hand Drill – Texturing Project

Triangle Count - 10,860

I have been proactively improving my texturing skills in my free time. I used the Artstation learning video created by Jason Ord called 'Substance Painter: Pushing Your Texturing Further' to create a vintage hand drill form scratch. Just want to thank Jason Ord for the Artstation resource and giving out helpful Painter advice on his video.

I created the Vintage Hand Drill low ply model in Autodesk Maya. High poly sculpt was done in Zbrush, adding some small details to the model. I did the baking in Marmoset Toolbag 4. Lastly, Substance 3D Painter was mainly for texturing purposes. There was one situation where I used Substance 3D Sampler to create a wood material from scratch, which I photo sourced the wood myself. I enjoyed doing the hand drill and had a lot of fun. I did take my own photos of a wood texture I made from scratch. I also did some hand painted techniques to show that the texturing became unique to my own artstyle.

I just want to say thank you for viewing my entry for The Rookies this year, really appreciate it! Feel free to leave a high five or comment down below.
