Kandy Mat

Here’s my Mat adaptation of Doctor Who’s The Kandyman. The Kandyman is a 1980s Doctor Who villain from the story The Happiness Patrol. I thought the Kandyman was a nice piece of design work from the show and thought it be fun to adapt the design, since it’s unique colourful, with lots of room to use displacements

Update - 19 Jan 2024

Just noticed this week the competition got extended, so I decided to refine a few elements, work on the presentation and put the final 'icing on the Mat'

Here’s a breakdown of all the design elements, as well as both camera angles

Couldn't resist doing my own posed render to give Kandy Mat some extra character, after seeing the extra posed render in the example overview

The Final Update for Kandy Mat!

Here is Kandy Mat in his Kandy Kitchen

Did a lot of work on the face and head to bring it up to the same quality as the rest of Kandy Mat

Happy with the end result! Really enjoyed working on this and increasing my knowledge using displacements in Substance

Update - 3 Jan 2024

Completed the arms and changed up the base. I previously had the marshmallow on the Substance Logo, but it made it difficult to read so I decided to incorporate it around the base instead, in the form of a marshmallow swirl. I reused the colour pallet from the chest section instead for the S Logo and added black and white kitchen tiles around as seen in the Doctor Who episode

Getting close to finishing my submission, all the elements are in place. Just need to rework the face and head, and give Kandy Mat his moustache

Update - 3 Jan 2024

Here's a few updates on Kandy Mat. I've now got his Marshmallow feet, arms and shoulder pieces done

Experimented with different mouths, originally tried to copy the original look of the costume, but it looked too creepy. So decided to rework it

Attempted to change the look of the head to fit with the Kandymans's design with a more flat profile on the back. Unsure if I'll keep it for the final design

Been experimenting with how I can design the base to fit with Kandy Mat's overall design

Update - 24 Dec 2023

So far I’ve started blocking out the main elements and shapes. Took quite a bit of trial and error to get the central yellow sweet to displace in the way I wanted it to. Happy with the level of displacement I'm getting and how its been developing so far, although I plan to go back and rework the head and face. For now I’ve tested it with a simple tilling circle pattern to see what the general effect could look like. Plan to create some custom textures for the head in Designer to get a more interesting and varied look

Here’s a look at some of the stages on the face, been building it up from scratch in substance painter with different shapes, trying to see how far I can get with it just using the stock alphas

Update - 23 Dec 2023

First of all wanted to thank the Rookies for running Meet Mat 3, didn’t get the chance to participate in the last Adobe one in 2020. So it’s great to see the Meet Mat challenge is back!

I’ve not touched using displacements in Substance Painter before, so should be a fun challenge and hopefully learn some new techniques

When thinking up design ideas of how to best make use of displacements and get an interesting silhouette, my mind went to Doctor Who

Introducing Kandy Mat!

He maybe evil and not to everyone’s taste, but underneath his hard-boiled exterior he’s got a soft centre

Here’s my Mat adaptation of Doctor Who’s The Kandyman. The Kandyman is a 1980s Doctor Who villain from the story the Happiness Patrol. On the surface the story is very bright and colourful, disguising the story’s darker tones

I thought the Kandyman was a nice piece of design work from the show, which went under appreciated in this era of the show. So thought it be fun to adapt the design for Mat
