Wooden Mat

I decided to make a wooden figurine with lots of different shapes and patterns taking inspiration from everyday beauty. The Wooden Mat accurately represents how wood and paint looks and changes over time.

Update - 10 Jan 2024

I have added more wear and tear around the hands, feet, base and edges on the head. Below I have added the close up of the hand, face and head. I plan to finish this soon with just a few more adjustments.

I decided to add a few different pictures of the object but in different light sources as this allowed me to see the object and the wood base differently to make any changes necessary. I added a few minor scratches to the base as well as some paint blisters. Although I see this object as a wooden figurine I wanted to exaggerate some of the damages to the object to give the feeling that it has been through a lot.

I made some small changes to the wood grain on the base to make sure it appeared as real wood does after being sanded or carved into shape.

Update - 8 Jan 2024

I am adding the final details and playing around with them until I am happy. I wanted the Wooden Mat to look worn so I have been adding wear and tear where that would normally build up. I have looked at wooden objects such as tables for reference.

Update - 3 Jan 2024

I decided to change the mouth, I like the smaller triangular mouth more with the beard and triangles for the cheek details.

I began by creating the wood base, I wanted to ensure the wood grain followed the object realistically, imagining that it was carved and sanded to this shape. I used different references for the wood, for the base I mainly used the image below. For the weathered and aged details I have looked at wooden objects, carvings and sculptures to understand how that effects the wood.

Update - 2 Jan 2024

I have made some changes to the head and arms. I have included the original designs with the new ones underneath. I have been finalising the wood grain so that I can add all the details which would be the grunge and scratches.

Update - 21 Dec 2023

I added the patterns to the head and created three quick faces to see what style I liked more. I am currently working on finalising the face so that I can work on the wood details. The first image I liked the idea of making the face look like it was carved but I didn't like the outcome of the eyes. I ended up liking the second image more as it looked more happy.

Inspired by wooden figures and the Polynesian design, I wanted to add shapes and patterns filling the whole body and head. I am currently making changes to the patterns and finalizing the head design following further research into the Polynesian culture to ensure where I have used Polynesian symbols that they have been appropriately used and placed. Last step will be adding the wood detail.

I wanted to add little details that would give my design a more personalised touch. Through the use of different shapes on the hands, I made it look like fingers, same for the toes and the heart.
