Update - 18 Jan 2024

Here is my final version, I've gone back to the first black version and made an aged/abandoned look for it.

Overall I enjoyed this whole process a lot. I usually only use substance painter really quickly when moving files between Maya and Unreal, so it was nice to take a second and actually spend an extended amount of time in the program.

A failed experiment!

With this update I changed the design a little bit. I thought it might be interesting to lean into the clinical/impersonal aspect of the robot, since it is a medical robot. I decided on white because it is a more clinical color and it would show the contrast more strongly with the darker weathering/aging. In the end once I made these, I decided to not use them as the final. It was a fun experiment, but ultimately a failed on I think. I tried to make the face more sinister, but it just felt like it had a less strong impact than the first one I made and I felt the clean one looked more like an astronaut than a medical robot. But that's ok, I had fun with it, and it helped be realize which direction I wanted to go in.

Update - 15 Jan 2024

So the concept behind this little robot is that's it's a therapy/wellness robot created brand new in the year 2056. That's the version you see here. For the final update, I will also make a version of the same robot from the year 2108 when it has been abandoned and left to decay.

On another note, I'm generally an environmental artist, and this was my first time diving into character art! I had a really fun time, especially deciding what type of emoji smile I wanted to do on this little guy.
