Meet Mat 3 - Caretos from Portugal

As all projects before this, even in UI design, I start with creating the mood board of what I want to achieve from the project. The main example given in the Meet Mat 3 overview is a design based on the culture of the region where the artist is from, that gave me an idea, as Portugal is a much lesser known culture I would like to have this chance to show some it off as well. Similar to Lion Dance costume, in Portugal there is something called Caretos which is a religious or folk ritual practiced in the Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro region of Portugal, with possible roots to pre-historical Celtic traditions. There is a similar thing that are called Caretos de Lazarim which is the same idea but from another region.
