Meet Mat 3: Forest Creature

For this project, I wanted to create an antropomorphised forest creature. You can see details that have roots in nature as well as some human accessories that have a meaning for this character.

Here's the fourth update of my forest creature. I've been adding more details, which is very fun. Working hard to get to the finish line :)

Here's the third update of my forest creature. This time I focused more on the face details and grassy texture on the body. Although it still needs more work, I like where it's headed overall. Here, I am starting to stray away from my initial sketch in order to capture something more appealing.

Here's the second update of my forest creature. The displacements were hard to figure out but I went with my initial plan of sculpting them in Zbrush and applying in Substance.  I learned that I can add  levels to control the height map on a specific layer. This was an eye opener! I love the flexibility of being able to fine tune each one according to need. I also used  the paths tool, which made things much easier for me! I love that it is procedural so I could easily modify things. Now my next step is to focus more on the head before I start refining details all throughout.

Update - 4 Dec 2023

Here's the first update of my forest creature. I like to work on the model as a whole without hyperfocusing on a single area in the beginning so that I can elevate and re-visit some choices as I make progress. So far, I have color blocked all areas and added some of the minor height details. Now, my challenge is the bigger pieces like the petals that make up its head and the little mushrooms. I will create them in ZBrush and apply in Substance; however increasing the displacement from the "displacement and tesellation" tab has cause my existing displacements to explode, so I might need to revisit those as well.

Hi! Welcome to my Meet Mat 3 entry. I would like to introduce you to my forest creature character. Inspired by the "Teenage Kraken" this creature is a knew species that is somewhat antropomorphised. As you will see in the concept sketch, I wanted to add some accessories and details to make it feel a little closer to us humans. Hope you enjoy my process and the final results. Here we go!

First, I wanted to do a quick sketch of my idea in order to have a base to go off of.  For this, I put together a reference board. As for the sketch, I played around with some different designs and aspects as I was figuring out who I want this character to be. I did not go into detail but rather wanted to capture the essence of the concept.
