The Matcracker

My entry for the Meet Mat Competition. The Matcracker. An obvious reference to the nutcracker, but also a subtle reference to me finally learning how to crack materials in Adobe Substance 3D Painter.

Update - 2 Dec 2023

Kia ora,

Substance painter is one of those low threshold, high ceiling programs that I have dealt with on numerous occasions but never spent time actually learning. Meet Mat 3 is going to be the reason for diving into SP deeper and learning all the tricks it has hidden.

As I'm still so inexperienced with SP I'm not sure how far I will be able to go with this project and whether I will be capable of pulling off the look I want, but hopefully as I progress through it I will develop the skills required to produce something worthwhile.

As we lead into the Xmas season, it seems only right to give Mat a seasonally appropriate make-over. So, without further adieu, meet the Matcracker.

When starting new projects, I often think about what is within scope. As I'm still new to SP I am not entirely sure of what is or isn't possible. I feel the nutcracker idea is a good starting point that isn't overly complex, but touches on many of the thing I have seen done in SP. Even though I have no idea how I'm going to achieve them.

I didn't want to spend too long with figuring out colours or exactly which elements Matcracker will have as I want to do much of this work within SP. So far, this quick sketch is a pretty good representation of what I had in mind. It might even go a bit spookier.
