My Environment Projects

Nicole Wellhausen
by NicoleWell on 28 May 2021 for Rookie Awards 2021

Hi, this is my entry for the Rookie Awards 2021. I would like to present you three of my recent environments. They all have a different focus and each were created to teach me to teach me a new technique, workflow or/and software. I want every piece to tell a story!

The Grand Staircase

The last light falls through the large arched window and illuminates the room sparsely. The main part of the room is occupied by the grand Georgian staircase going up to some unknown floors. There is nothing else besides some pictures on the wall, some lonely furniture and a few scattered books on the ground. The dust tells us that the previous owner left a long time ago. So why are the candles burning?

The Grand Staircase - University Project

Software: Houdini, Substance Painter, Photoshop
Focus: Modelling, Mood

This project really strengthened my modelling skills and my attention to details. The overall mood was very important for me.

It was also the first project, where I have used Houdini from start to finish. So a lot of new things were learned during the progress. Additionally, I have used Substance Painter and Photoshop.

The Forest Temple

Only a few people know about the forgotten temple deep in the forest. I was once dedicated to the god Apollo, as the stories tell. But now nature takes back its place.

The Forest Temple - Personal Project

Software: Houdini, V-Ray, SpeedTree, Photoshop
Focus: Foliage, Lighting

This project was my attempt to work a little more with foliage and trees. Megascans and SpeedTree were a big help for that!

The temple is inspired by the Apollo Temple, which is interestingly not standing in a country like Greece, but rather in the middle of Germany, close to my home. It is a magical place in real life and I really wanted to capture that in this project.

Unreal Ruins

You are sent on the quest to find all the missing pieces of a long-lost treasure. Your journey brings you to those old broken down ruins, which you can't wait to explore.

Unreal Ruins - University Project

Software: Maya, Unreal Engine 4, Substance Painter, ZBrush
Focus: Style, Modularity

For this project I wanted to create a stylized environment, contrary to the rather realistic looking stuff I do all the time. I wanted to attach importance to the modularity of the models and the textures. It was also a good way to get more into Unreal Engine.

I hope you enjoy this sneak peek of my work.
I am always looking for feedback, so feel free to tell me what you think!
