Lighting Compositing Generalist - Nele Wilbuer

by nelewilbuer on 27 May 2021 for Rookie Awards 2021

Hi everyone! All of my projects were done during my education at Pixl Visn. One and a half years full of fun, experience and also problems that, at first, I had no clue how to solve but in the end it all worked out. I learned so much and I am happy to share my work here with you.

Mussel Landscape

This was the first bigger project that I have created. I saw the Concept Art from Martin Deschambault and was amazed by his idea, so I asked him if I could use it and started.

I gave it my own touch - a more soft interpretation.

After Blocking and Modeling, which both were done quiet quickly, I created the Texture in Mari. I love how many possibilities you have to combine high quality textures that are already out there, combine them and make it your own. I mostly got my textures from Poliigon.

In general I am more about the overall mood and feeling and this environment gave me much to explore and learn.

For me it was important to see the details that the mussels got from the Displacement Maps and to set some accents on the roots.

For Compositing I made sure to get a nice mood, I created the fog, added the sun and adjusted colors until I was happy with the result.

With this project I really learned a lot. There were a lot of things that did not work great right away and that I had to find solutions for, so it was a great chance to improve my skills.

Cartoon Girl

I wanted to do some character Lighting, since I am more focused on Lighting and Compositing I took an already existing model and thought of a good environment to build around.

I chose to create this room because it has a touch of my own taste, I like this pink color theme, the cute posters and some light chains, so it was fun for me to create the room and I wanted to have different light sources. Some coming from the window with a bit of light coming through the curtains and the light chains adding a nice glow.

Attic

Not the most amazing render, but this was the basic Idea. I tested the lighting to see how everything that I just scribbled on my paper could actually look in 3D.

This Project was great to practice Volumetric Lighting. I rendered the basic God Rays in Maya, using V-Ray. Added a bit more life to it by using a smoke Footage and some Dust Particles. That was done in Nuke.

Caterpillar

I really enjoyed working on this project. I wanted something to practice Subsurface Scattering on and I found it interesting to see how a Caterpillar looks like, they are actually really cute.

I like the overall green and yellowish look, I added some gobo effect to get a nice integration into the environment.
