CG Portfolio Spring 2021

Anushka Tina Nair
by anushkatinanair on 20 May 2021 for Rookie Awards 2021

This CG portfolio represents my work over the 20-21 school year, including projects exercising modeling, texturing, rigging, animating, lighting, and compositing. I'm passionate about history, literature and complex female characters and try to bring those elements into my work. I am responsible for all aspects.

I Am No Bird

"I am no bird" is a scene I modeled, laid out, textured, and lit fully, just for a personal project. I based this scene on the 1847 novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. In this scene, young governess Jane contemplates her own independence where she works at Thornfield Hall, all while observing a caged bird in the library. The design of the room and the props are inspired by period furniture from the mid-nineteenth century. The room as a whole was designed with the mood and feel of Haddon Hall, the real-life northern English location Bronte is said to have based Thornfield Hall on. The paintings on the wall allude to other characters in the story who play a huge role on Jane's development, and the books on the floor reference books that Jane read and mentioned in the novel.

Process images including the grey model, topology, and the overall blocking, refining, texturing, layout and lighting progress.

I also tested out the Jane model's appeal earlier on by creating a subtle, elegant storytelling pose for her.

The Animator's Tango - Junior Year Spring Project

***

"The Animator's Tango" was a semester-long junior year project meant to highlight nuanced acting in animation through a sophisticated face rig and a polished lip sync. Above is the blend test for my character rig.

I decided to make my assignment around a self-caricatured character satirizing the Chicago musical - specifically, an unhinged student dealing with the aftermath of a crashed Maya file. To further my own interest in modeling, I used the opportunity to sculpt a highly detailed dress and thoughtfully-ornamented accessories for my character.

Above is the completed lip sync animation assignment. I also gained the experience of simulating the intricate dress that I modeled.

Above is the the thumbnailing I did in preparation for animation, followed by testing out poses. Model and texture details are included as well for when I was testing out the render.

Above is the visual development I completed in preparation for the character modeling and rigging, with photographic reference for all of the details.

The Bloody Duchess - Based on the concept by visual development artist Cecile Carre.

Above you can view the final model, grey model, topology - followed by Cecile Carre's original concept art which I captured in 3D.

Alan Rickman - Realistic Bust

***

As an exercise in realistic anatomy, I sculpted this bust of Alan Rickman in 13 hours entirely in ZBrush.

Summer CG Bust Exercises - I modeled, textured, and lit the following just prior to starting junior year.

The first bust is a CG caricature of Emma from Jane Austen's novel, as portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy in Autumn de WIlde's 2020 film adaptation of Emma. My goal with this was to adapt the beautiful period costumes from the film into something suitable for a CG model. I also wanted to accessorize her like in the film, so I made her a decadent gold necklace with aventurine stone and diamond inlays, and a nylon faux feather for her hat.

The second is a stylized Mr. Rochester from Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, inspired by the lighting from Cary Fukunaga's 2011 film adaptation of the novel.

The third is a stylized Elliot Alderson as portrayed by Rami Malek in Sam Esmail's TV show Mr. Robot.
