6. Renders

Again my first time in Iray render engine. I rendered all the highlighted cameras from the document. Used default HDRI Studio envrionement from Substrance. This is my entry for Eddie the robot on therookies.com I guess:) Anyway it has been pretty fun, and i learned some basics of a new software i never used before. Btw. thanks for the UV's guys ;)

5. More Painting

Refining the final design. Adding some detail. Sticking to the original reference tho. I want the render to look like a painted worn vitage tin toy. Finishing the back  side of Eddie as well. I think I'm ready for some higress renders now.

3. Painting in Substance

This was my first time working with Substance painter. I must say i like it. There was a lot back and forth involved, despite I made some sketches beforehand. I made a few custom alphas in the process, to paint the retro elements on Eddie.

2. Sketches

I rendered a simple matcap Eddie turntable to sketch on. We used to do this with trains etc. back in my graffity days. I like to sketch with pencils and markers or i often use SketchUp 4 this phase. Its a good idea to do a few of them. It helps to decide with the final design.

1. Reference images

I always start  projects like this with surfing on the internet, finding interesting images of the topic I'm about to work on. With Eddie the first idea was a Slavic junk robot. For this the rules of the contest were not ideal, the geometry is too symetric and no chance of different salvaged parts of the body, changing the geometry etc. Than i looked at the geometry again and realized, that those old vintage Japaneese toys and tin robots that im putting on my Ebay wishlist might share some style with Eddie here...
