Motion Graphics
A collection of motion design projects done during my time at Nanyang Polytechnic while pursuing the Diploma in Motion Graphics Design.
Rewind
For this project, I challenged myself to produce a short film inspired by the song 'Never Grow Up' by Taylor Swift. A visual exploration of the journey from living in a childhood home to a pre-independent life, capturing the bittersweet reality of growing up.
I've always been fascinated by film emulation, particularly the aesthetics of 8 and 16mm films. I love how it looks—the treatment of colors, the graininess, the low frame rate, halation, and the handheld camera effect.
I wanted to create something nostalgic, something I and many others can relate to.
Hence, with all these elements, the song inspiration and theme of nostalgia in mind, I decided to create a short film about the journey of growing up. It uses familiar objects, experiences and timestamps as hints of a linear progression of time.
For the final video, film matte was added to create the 4:3 ratio look.
Lost Carvings - Title Sequence
The story of a statue that has been long forgotten.
For this school project, I wanted to do a concept on abandonment. Inspired by several 3D wood carving projects on ArtStation, I decided to combine the two concepts into my title sequence.
The primary animation was the camera movement, but I decided to push my skills further to include a secondary animation, which is the growth animation for the grass and moss. It was difficult handling the timing of the animations as they would often overlap, slowing down the rendering process.
The requirements were to use only models provided by Cinema 4D and Three D Scans, or to model them myself.
For the last scene, I played around with the lighting the most. I was struggling to get the right lighting and mood. Initially, I experimented with vibrant and warm lighting, and although I really liked how it looked, it didn't capture the theme of abandonment.
Eventually, I toned the lighting down to create a cold and lonely atmosphere, which fits the concept better. I also added a background image of trees and color corrected the scenes in After Effects.
