Whispers from the Abyss

Thrilled to finally unveil this project! It's been 8 months of hard work, traveling to a new country, and learning a lot. Today, I'm proud to share my latest demo reel, crafted during my Mentorship at Think Tank Center. Huge thanks to the school for giving me the chance to do the mentorship in Vancouver. It's been an amazing journey, meeting new people and learning from them. Special shoutout to Jon Catapia, lead build TD at DNEG, for his guidance in improving my skills and bringing this project to life.

This project is inspired on the movie 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' and serves as a visual representation of Davy Jones' quarters, featuring his distinctive piano as a focal point.

Main shot.

The volumetrics of all the scene are made in Houdini with the Axiom Solver to work faster on GPU and reimported to maya with VDBs.

The floor is composed of rocks scattered procedural with Houdini. Also is composed of wood planks made on zbrush and textured in substance painter. All the tubes that are around the piano are made on zbrush and textured in Mari.

The piano is the main piece of the environment, the candle flames are placed directly in comp with an actual footage of one candle..

Procedural barnacles made in Houdini with procedural scattering

The piano was in the first phases all in maya to compose all the basic shapes. Then I switched to Zbrush to merge all. The key for the texturing was create a solid displacement and bump map to get the feeling of old wood but with details in some parts.

The center part of the piano is made in photoshop recreating the actual painting of the movie.

Some screenshots of the early modeling of the piano.

These are some of the references. I used for the environment and the image composition.
