Shot Progression
Animation
The motion capture technology has been extensively used in most of our shots, having real actors collaborating in a mocap specialized room that the university provided us with. Every mocap animation was then polished and fixed by our animation department to achieve a cleaner result. However, some other shots have also been animated by hand and from scratch, including some biped and every creature animations.
We were lucky to be able to test the Unreal Engine's newly released Metahuman technology along with the Apple Arkit application. This pipeline was key to achieve realistic facial expressions.
VFX
Special effects were something we really wanted to stand out in, and our FX artists did an amazing job.
All effects were created and rendered in Houdini, but those that were mainly VDBs were taken to Maya, where the lighting artists took care of them and implemented them into the scene. Once rendered via Mantra or Arnold we composed everything using Nuke.
Rendering
We had a long road ahead of us, but in the end, we managed to define our style and match it through the whole trailer.
For rendering, we have made ourselves acquainted with the Deadline technology. Once we had them all out of the render farm, the shots were treated in post-production in order to remove any imperfection and apply the color corrections we deemed necessary.
