Creature design is something I'm extremely passionate about. In fact, all media horror and science fiction related is something I've loved deeply since I was pretty young. I hope to one day become a creature/character artist in fields both 3D and 2D!

Typically, fairies are depicted as bug-like humans, with wings like that of a dragonfly. I wanted to create my own fairy, meant to function in a dark fantasy themed story, that was inspired by birds! I started with really loose sketches before making my way into Zbrush and refining the design there.

The hardest part was figuring out how to create all the feathers. I created my own feather card in Maya, specifically for larger feathers, and utilized Zbrush's fibermesh function for far smaller, subtle feathers.

Various feather maps were created in order to make sure she had a good variety of feather designs. Even in the rendering phase, more and more feathers were added on later.

For the month of May, specifically known as 'Mermay' amongst the art community, I challenged myself to create a horror themed mermaid. I've never really created an underwater creature before. I wanted it to seem as though the creature were once human, carrying the colors of a drowned corpse. Perhaps that's exactly the appearance it uses to lure its prey in.

Trying to nail the colors and texture required some early paintovers of a blank Zbrush sculpt I threw together. I also looked at various images, including but not limited to, deep sea creatures and SFX drowned corpses.

The fairy featured first belongs in the same world as the next character I'm showing in this portfolio. The story is meant to be a dark fantasy, action take on the tale of Abel and Cain, but rather what occurs after Abel's murder. It focuses in on Cain's son, Enoch, who's attempting to understand why he and all of humanity has been cast away to the the Land of Nod.

The typology featured here is of subdivision level two. The model can be posed and rendered with far less polys.

Thank you for taking the time to look through my submission!
