I've always tinkered with in-game editors when I was younger - starting with the Warcraft 3 Editor, though I never thought it as a valid career path until somewhere near the late years of college (high-school) when I applied for a Game Design Bachelors degree - thanks to my teacher who pushed me to do so. At the end of secondary school (16 years old) I knew I wanted to pursue something art related - and like many people, gaming was my hobby and passion; so I put 2 and 2 together.
