I was in my 3rd year of product design & manufacture engineering at university, and I was revising over the winter break for my January exams. I found a documentary made my Noclip on youtube about the making of the game Doom 2016. In the documentary, the creative director at ID studios, Hugo Martin, spoke a lot about his previous work as a concept artist for the film Pacific Rim and I had the realisation of "Wait... That's a job?! That's the designing I want to be doing!".
