CINDER

For the graduation film from The Netherlands film academy, I was in charge of designing and creating the costumes of the main and the background characters. Here I will explain the deeper meaning of the designs for each character.

Dante

For Dante's costume in the film "Cinder," as the lead character and a tailor with diverse backgrounds, we aimed to incorporate various cultures into the common British gilet style of men's apparel from the 1880-1920 time period. We drew inspiration from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures for the design of the collar.

To represent these influences, the collar of Dante's costume features ornate weaving or patterning reminiscent of traditional vests from those regions. This design choice serves to celebrate the multicultural aspect of Dante's character and creates a visual connection between his personal background and the broader world. It adds depth to his costume and contributes to the overall storytelling of the film.

The Poppy

In "Cinder," Dante's collar is decorated with a poppy pattern. The poppy is a significant symbol that carries its own deeper meaning. It is often associated with remembrance, sacrifice, and even resilience. By incorporating the poppy pattern into Dante's collar design, we have added another layer of symbolism to his character.

Additionally, the red color also represents undying love for his son, evokes a deep emotional connection and highlights the strength of his bond with his child.

When the design was finalized, it was time to translate it into Marvelous designer.

After translating the designs for the Dante into Marvelous Designer, the next step involved further refining the garments. This included adding smaller details and intricate elements to enhance the overall appearance and realism. To accomplish this, the designs were handed over to ZBrush and eventually sent to shading.

Leonardo

For Leonardo's costume we wanted to create an impression of an innocent young boy. We wanted to incorporate the fact that he is the son of a middle worker tailor into his clothing, reflecting the care and love his father puts into dressing him.

When researching children's apparel from the 1880-1920 time period, and looked into various styles and trends. Using sketches, we further refine the design for Leonardo's costume. Consider elements such as the choice of fabric, color palette, and small details that add to the overall portrayal of his innocence and refinement. It's important to strike a balance between a well-made outfit and one that suits a young boy's character.

Translating the chosen design for Leonardo into Marvelous Designer and work on achieving the desired fit and shape and finish it by following a similar process as with Dante.

Additionally, incorporating fur into the cardigan through the grooming process by the groomer, adds a layer of texture and visual interest to Leonardo's costume.

Here u will the final rendering of the main characters.

Background Characters

We researched the socio-economic differences during that time period and explored clothing worn in various cultures for the background characters in "Cinder." By incorporating these elements such as a semi-headscarf or a obi around the waist, you can effectively convey the well-being and background of the characters, adding depth to the village setting.

Designing different garments for women, children, and men, as well as considering the age differences, allows us to showcase a diverse range of characters and their stories. The 10 designs —two for old and young men, two for old and young women, a boy, and a girl—provide an opportunity to visually represent the varying ages and roles within the community.

The designs where translated to Marvelous designer. After everything was done , it was handed out to Zbrush to add further smaller details and was sent to shading.
