I created a sculpt based on one of my own digital paintings as a fun experiment and deviation from my usual work.

Recently, I have been interested in mixing different creative mediums together, particularly painting / drawing with 3D modelling. Above is a digital painting I decided to recreate in 3D; although it is simple, I was interested in recreating the specific lighting and brush strokes that can be seen in this painting. I also liked that this was painted directly from my own reference image, which I though would show a nice iterative process at the end of the project.

Initially I started modelling and lighting inside of Maya, creating the basic shapes and colours of the image and experimenting with different coloured shadows in the lighting stage. However, I began to realise that the painterly look of the original image would be better emphasised if I began to sculpt into the model. Because of this, I decided to take the model from Maya into Nomad Sculpt.

Working in Nomad Sculpt was a really enjoyable process. I worked through the model adding small details, comparing to the reference painting as I went. I then started painting in Nomad Sculpt too. Normally, this is something I would want to take into Substance Painter, but since this was a personal, experimental project, I carried on with what felt comfortable to me. This way I was also able to implement the same painting techniques I had used in the original piece.

Finally, I began experimenting with different colours and lighting on the model. These are some of the final choices I decided between. I really started to enjoy the more saturated colours, as I felt it made the model look most similar to the original painting, however the most amount of saturation here did feel a little too bold. I also brought these images into Procreate to do some final edits, attempting to add a paper like filter to create a similar feel to the original painting.
