Round of applause for our sponsors

Hi, for this term at TheOneAcademy I decided to model an engine for my hard surface class. Initially I wanted to create hypercars/guns but instead I was introduced to modelling car engines because I was told it would be a fun challenge

Big thanks to Tommy wong(instructor) and Sebastian(senior) for their feedback and guidance !

Week 1-5

Starting with the majestic Chiron engine as my reference, I spent a tiresome 5 weeks blocking the major component to get a sense of its tricky proportion. The goal of this blocking stage was speed, so using a lot of booleans was a given. A big hurdle I faced during the blocking process was understanding how an engine is assembled, but this obstacle was overcome after a thorough study of engine anatomy.

Week 5-8

After the first pass of blocking is done, I dove into a draining yet rewarding 2-3 weeks of fixing topology, cleaning up the mesh and modelling all the remaining single details in my model.

Even though this process had me questioning my sanity I'm grateful that it improved my understanding of topology and learned a couple new things such as the Quad Draw Tool, Quad Topology simplifying and understanding how to terminate etc.

UV + Texturing

As straightforward as it sounds, I did the uvs and proceeded to texture the W16 engine, initially I wanted to create a clean look but I was advised by a senior, Sebastian, to approach the engine with a "worn and used" texture and the results are much appealing to look at.

Lighting + Rendering - 1 day

Lastly, for lighting + rendering. I decided to use the well-known Marmoset Toolbag for its known real-time rendering result, one mistake that I will always remember was forgetting to assign the faces of my uvsets in a more methodical procedure for the udims workflow, it was until I imported it into Marmoset that I realize I had to reexport the mesh from Maya with the udim FACES assigned Blinn. Looking past the udim issue, lighting and rendering were quite straightforward, I made sure every light source was working on its own and together with its surrounding light and not causing disharmony. Huge thanks to Sebastian for assisting me with setting up Marmoset on the school campus.
