An imitation of a Subata from Deep Rock Galactic that I made and animated in Blender. This was part of a project that I did to learn the controls and features of Blender.

Hey everyone! I've made an imitation of the Subata handgun from Deep Rock Galactic.
The purpose of this project was for me to learn the controls of Blender, since most of my 3D work has been in Maya, and I wanted to give a new software a try. Blender is intriguing to me because it has the ability to seamlessly integrate with Unity projects.

Above are my final renders in Substance painter, and animations from Blender.
More on the process plus some goodies below!

I started by assembling some references and beginning to model the basic shaped in Blender. I chose the Subata because it was a low poly model from a video game I enjoyed, and it would give me a good goal to work towards while practicing.

After getting the basic shapes in, I modeled the grip and started adding color.

I kept switching between the game, pictures, and videos that I played frame by frame to get a good look at all the pieces. Eventually I detailed the magazine and the Sight Hoop while messing with lighting and shading.

Last was probably the trickiest part of the entire weapon. The Slide Rack/Slide Grip, placed on the back of the the weapon. It had a lot of unique geometry that required multiple tries to get right. A few accidentally caught vertices made me end up repeating the process several times.

Phew! Finally the model was done! I started cutting the UVs and grouping objects for animation, making a couple control surfaces to rotate and move the weapon. I also asked a few friends for some color palettes, ending up with the following...

Finally I was able to take the UVs and put the weapon into Substance Painter. Phew! Making a few textures within, adding my own colors, and adding some scratching details elevated the weapon closer to realism than the games counterpart, but I think it turned out pretty amazing!

I definitely learned a lot about Blender, and got used to the control and ui differences from Maya. Overall I'd call this project a success!
