Gears of War Fanart - Runner
The aim of this project was to create a game-ready character based in the Gears of War universe.
The aim of this project was to create a game-ready character based in the Gears of War universe. The brief I came up with for this project was to design a "runner" that would bring high-value items back and forth from the teams on the frontlines.
One of the challenges during my design process was finding a good balance between lightweight armor while also being strong enough to protect the vitals and also trying to keep within the Gears of war aesthetic.
With that came a bunch of learning objectives:
- Hair card creation, layout and baking
- Limitations of game characters
- Baking (what works / doesn't work)
- Marmoset Toolbag
- Marvelous Designer to ZBrush
- Shading, Lighting, and Rendering in Unreal Engine using Lumen
This project also gave me a chance to deep-dive into ZBrush and use it as an all-in-one modeling tool instead of jumping back and forth between different programs.

- Retopo and UV's in Maya
- Hair cards created and baked with xGen in Maya
- Card placement in Maya with GSCurve Tool.
- Baked in Marmoset Toolbag 4
- Textured in Substance 3D Painter
- Rigged and posed inside Maya
- Rendered in Unreal Engine 5 with Lumen
I learned a ton from this project and yet, it feels like I only scratched the surface.
