The Old Man

 Look Development Stages

The full model, Xgen and additional textures like freckles, nails and eyes were done by Rex.  Meanwhile the full attire’s texture and skin base (SSS) were done by me.

Test Renders

These test renders are to make sure the Xgen, rigs and texture work well together.

Facial Test animated by Siew Yee • Full Model Turntable posed by Keyne • Models and Textures by Rex, Layla, Chaosai and Jing Han, Eng Chuan and Li Ann

The Environments

Moon Clock Look and Transformation

Experimented different crater styles ranged from stylized to realistic. In the end we went for semi realistic look and split it into three moon phases : Half Moon, Gibbous Moon and Crescent Moon for the transformation and blending tests later on.

For the final, the animators decided to hide and swap between models because the blending did not work out due to texture and craters clashing. The non-split model was reused as the real moon in the final act. The last image of this section is the four main moon phases for the lamp posts.

Crescent Moon Clock Concept Revised

The modelling team was given the opportunity to revise the concept of the Crescent Moon Clock. Below are our rough inputs that we think suit best based on our 3D sense and gathered references from pre-production .

After receiving the green light and a bit more revision from our director, the 3D art director, we began to experiment the look development in 3D.

The Earth

For the Earth texture I used Solar Textures as they provide both night and day versions. I created the alpha maps and mask to combine both day and night textures and bring out the night lights of the night version texture maps.

Lighting Shots

The environment lighting in one of Act 1's and all of Act 3 were done by me!

Credits to Keyne, Amelia, Wee Keong, Florence, Layla and Chaosai for compositing Act 3 shots

Animated Short Film

That is all of the works that I have contributed to this project. Once again thank you so much to everyone in the team for making this happen despite the ups and downs we went thru. Finally, our short film is out on Youtube and I hope you enjoyed viewing my process in this project!
