Meteorite Model
This is a 3D model of a meteorite rock I made in ZBrush as part of a class project.
This model of a meteorite rock was made in ZBrush as part of a class. This was my first time really diving into ZBrush, so there were a lot of tricks to learn. It took multiple passes around the entire model with the move brush and standard brush to carve out the holes and ridges all over the references. After getting a shape that I was satisfied with, I learned how to use alphas to give the rock far more detailed textures. I also went in with a very small standard brush to hand carve some of the deeper, smaller holes along the rock but unfortunately, they don't come across very clearly in the render.
The largest challenge I had with this model was creating two holes along the top edge. Having only ever used booleans in Maya, I needed my professor's help to ultimately understand how Live Booleans work in ZBrush. Once I was able to figure that out, I retraced my steps to create a second hole in the upper left corner of the rock to give it more character. It took a lot of messing around with these holes to make them look more natural, but I eventually got them to a place that I was happy with. With the full shape of the rock complete, I painted the entire rock, giving the upper half a smoother, more weathered metal color and keeping the bottom of the rock must more rough and rust-colored.
After painting the rock, I learned to render it out and put all of the pieces together in photoshop to create this presentation slide. Ultimately, I'm very happy with how the rock came out and I think it displays elements of all three of my references.
