Butterfly Island - A Stylized Vacation
I decided to go on vacation... an Unreal vacation.
A chance to practice open-world environment design combined with a variety of visual effects, Butterfly Island is a stylized tropical world created in Unreal Engine 4. Featuring a day/night cycle, florescent foliage, and immersive audio; it is the beginning of a potentially interactive application. The majority of the foliage and textures are from Quixel Megascans. The textures were altered in GIMP to create a candy-colored garden isolated on a tranquil island.
Daytime on Butterfly Island ~
A sky full of butterflies, electric blue palm trees, and a roman-arc hammock...
The hammock, palm trees, and fig trees were created in Blender 3D. I edited textures from Quixel Megascans in GIMP to alter the color of the remaining foliage and create the butterflies. The butterfly shader uses strong subsurface scattering. This creates a glowing effect when the wings are silhouetted against the sunlight.
The dynamic day/night cycle was created in Unreal using geospatial lighting. I altered the colors in the sky sphere for a pink/red sunset at the end of the day.
