Virtual Plein Air

In this school assignment, we are tasked to generate 3 sets of matte painted concepts based on chosen location via google maps capture or any high-resolution photos. We are to analyze and implement painting techniques for aperiodic change of time with a theme to create a photo-realistic shot. Most importantly, we have to block out 3 artwork based on the images selected without color picking from the chosen photo.

🏔️Mountains

Below is the reference image I sourced from Unsplash.

To begin with, I blocked out the colors of the environment based on the reference image. The shape and form of the assets were not defined, as I wanted to focus on the colors at this stage.

After blocking out, I progressed to refine it. To create the smoke, I used smoke texture brushes to give a more realistic feel. Below is my final outcome.

💡 Reflection

Through this assignment, I have applied my knowledge in perspective, value, color palette, composition fundamentals, etc to obtain believability and realism. Though it's challenging, it is exceptionally calming to paint environments as it brings peace to me.
