This is my entry for the “Cute Robots” weekly drill
Meet Pingu-bot! a robot shaped and decorated like a penguin that has as its main function to eat and process the trash that is scattered on the beaches and the sea, trying to clean them from all man-made pollution. Its absolutely adorable and a true hero!
I used Maya for the modeling; Substance Painter and Quixel Mega Scans for the texturing; I used some Mega Scans for the texturing and decorating of the base and rendered all in Arnold inside Maya.
Before I started modeling I googled some images to use as inspiration or as concept art
I really liked the idea of making a realistic but cute robot, I tried googling some references and found a concept that really caught my attention, an animal like robot that looked like a bunny. I thought to myself, what is cuter than baby animals?
Now I had the “raw” idea but I had to choose what animal to do. I tried different animal until I searched for penguins and felt I had found the perfect match. After checking some more images of robots and penguins I had a rough idea of what I wanted to do.
The following images are the references I used for the creation of “Pingu-Bot”
I wanted to document all the design process but the truth is I was so inspired and focused that forgot to take pictures of the different version I made, so we are jumping to the final concept I made. All the modeling was made in Maya, the robots texturing was made in substance painter, and it was all rendered in Arnold.
The original concept was simply a robot shaped like a penguin, but when I was done texturing I had already created a backstory and functionalities for it without realizing. The Pingu-bot´s were created to clean the beaches and the sea from trash, they eat all the trash and waste they find and process it to turn it into a fuel to power itself.
The particular Pingu-bot I rendered is one that has just come out of the sea and is cleaning the trash from the beach. Its full of scratches, sand and rust because its been at its job for a very long time. The fins and feet edges are all scraped as well as the beak that is full of scratches from all the junk and trash that it’s been eating. This Pingu-bot needs to go to a mechanic soon!
The following is the turntable for Pingu-Bot
