Since I already did the design of the character, I had the first part of the work almost done, while I did a quick mindmap of what I wanted the room to feel, I also did a very loose drawing of what I wanted visually, I wanted the living room to have a very cultist and religious vibe, with the idea of an alchemist being the character.

The first step was to do the 2d sketch, which I separated into 3 parts: a loose sketch in which I begin to see how the whole room is going to be, Taking all the measures and blocking the proportions, and a last sketch to see if the proportions work correctly.

The first thing I did was putting the room’s perspective into place, after that I placed the 2D measures into perspective as well, and after that I placed all the volumes of the room.

After this I drew the round parts of the room, since it was easier to take the measures in squares than in circles, after that I sketched the details in red over the sketch.

I got a little carried away and I started adding more details to the lineart, finishing the whole lineart in one go, which is not a recommended practice but it was what I did.

The lighting was the part that I liked the most, beforehand I did the Ambient occlusion of the room and I also added the textures of the room using the technique of photobashing, after finishing the whole texturing I hid that layer to work better with the light.

I wanted to have two different lights, each one having a different mood and also each one pointing to a different part of the room, so the spotlight changed between scenes, for both I had the same pipeline, first I started shading the whole room with a warm or cold color, after that I erased the parts I wanted them to be in light, after that I added with an airbrush a very saturated color to the edge, to give the light more strength and dramatism. After that I added a color dodge layer to make the parts that weren’t in the shadow lighter.

When I finished both scenes I added the textures to the scenes and I did some little adjustments to make it look good.

Here you can see the comparison of one of the early sketches with the finished design without light or shadow.

Here you can see the different lights and shadows with and without textures.

This is the finished night design.

This is the finished day design.
