Space Marine Helmet.
A piece I did a few years back. Just showing off some old stuff before I replace it with new. This should hopefully give a small insight to my creative process too.
This is a piece I worked on a few years back. I had to take a hiatus due to some family stuff, but I'm getting back into concept art by studying with Collarts. I'm scraping the rust off while learning new things. I'm confident in my abilities that I can do better than this now, but I need some placeholder art to show what I'm at least capable of.
About this piece: I was given the task to design a space marine helmet, set 100 years in the future (so not too futuristic). I was also instructed to pick out influences completely different things. Out of the six I sketched out, I picked a design based off of the Pachycephalosaurus. I tried to add the elements to my design, so I kept the top part of the helmet smooth, and used the area where spikes would be, as a place to put a heap of antennas and lights. I also noticed in some illustrations of the Pachycephalosaurus, bone or cartilage circled the eyes, so I used that to frame the goggles. At the back of the helmet, to keep it interesting and utilize space, I added a compartment for a First Aid kit, and indicator lights (for your teammates to keep an eye on you). I also wanted to personalize it a bit so it didn't look generic, so I put on the smiley face sticker as well as a peeling "Good job!" sticker, the Aussie flag and a chalked on "A92" (a personal easter egg of mine).
