Game Environment – East of the Sun and West of the Moon

This Environment was created as my Bachelor Thesis Project. It was the first time for me to create a larger environment in-engine with me being responsible for every single step. I learned a lot about modularity, baking, texturing, lighting and Unreal Engine.

East of the Sun and West of the Moon

This Environment was created for my Bachelor Thesis Project. It is inspired by the Norwegian fairy tale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon". The whole Project, from Concept to Final Rendering, is done by me. I really had fun creating the whole environment from A to Z. The scene is rendered real-time in-engine.

The houses are created from a modular set I created with blender. Texturing was done in Substance Designer and Painter. Some textures were also created in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The project was then lit and rendered in Unreal Engine 4.19. Foliage was created in SpeedTree.

Doors, Windows, Trims and decorative Elements for the houses were textured in Substance Painter and Designer. All of them show signs of the tale and/or Norway (like carvings in the wood).

For most of my assets I created a high poly and low poly object to create highly detailed textures. Baking was done in Substance Painter.

Some textures were created in Substance Designer to create procedural textures. I really fell in love with Designer during this project!
