Round of applause for our sponsors
I took some time to polish this eye a bit more after the drill. The above is the final result!
This was a great drill. I found a good tutorial (I had never made an eye before) that I followed for a bit before deviating and modeling the iris to better fit reference photos I have. Specifically, I have seen many eye references that show a subtle ring that dips around the iris that connects to the sclera, so I modeled that in addition to what I learned in the tutorial. I thought it looked more like a child's eye because the iris is larger in the ratio to the overall eye size than an adult's. So I resized the iris to be the ratio of an adult's eye. See the previous eye below!

I modeled in Maya, textured in Photoshop and Substance Painter, and rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 3. I got the picture of the iris from here.

Update as of 7/7/20:

Kudos to Tom Römer for his idea to use a model head from The Wikihuman Project. I decided to do one more thing and place my eyes within one of the sample heads. I rendered in Marmoset and brought into Photoshop for some retouching and addition of eyebrows since I couldn't find the texture set with them on the face. :)
