MONAD - The Endless City was an assignment I created for 2D Bootcamp in the first semester of my third year at Flinders University & CDW Studios.
For the assignment I created the story of the world, designed three characters, three locations, two vehicles, and then did a series of paintings - one for each location and a hero shot of one ship featuring the other. To help me understand the style and feel of the entire project, I also painted two splash pieces quite early in the process.
During this assignment I was introducing myself to 3D tools for the first time - the paintings for this assignment contain 3D objects generated in zBrush and Maya which were then rendered in Keyshot and composited into my regular painting software, Photoshop. I found this technique useful and it has become a regular pipeline in my workflow.
Below are the character and spaceship designs, and their respective early ideations. I took two different approaches to designing the hero ships - and their design changed again between this stage and their appearance in the above hero shot. For the smaller ship, I chose to draw out each thumbnail, while with the larger one I focused on silhouette - this was because in all shots it would feature in it would be a menacing presence in the distance.
