Uncover Hidden Talent: Hire the World’s Top New Digital Artists
Growing up I always found that I loved drawing and the natural world. As I grew older, I found myself gravitating towards biology due to my interest in discovering and depicting the plants and animals I studied. When studying towards my degree in Marine Biology, I found I enjoyed scientific illustration and animation, and began taking classes in 3D animation and illustration alongside my primary study, eventually having concept art as my primary aspiration, drawing from my biology background.
When I was a kid I didn't like school. I was shy and would doodle superheroes in class, until I delved into a digital design course. I remember being allowed to draw for that class and thinking "damn, imagine doing this for a living". Then it hit me that people do this all the time - in movies, games, websites and all sorts of things I know and love. It felt like a release, like I knew who I wanted to be. That thought led me to study Media Design and has propelled me to the creative industry.
After finishing my degree in Industrial design, I've decided to take some of the illustration and software's I've learned and and build on my passion for drawing in general. I'm self taught and very inspired to produce work at the same quality as some of the concept artists out there producing beautiful work for the film and game industries.
When I was in middle school and saw the first 3D animation in my life,I was shocked and I thought it would be super cool to use this 3D technique to tell my stories and express my thought. After that I began to self-taught photoshop, aftereffect, coreldraw, flash etc. When I was in University I had the professional training and studies.
Several years ago in early high school I would play video games and see the artistry of the game(models, illustrations, textures, etc..). That's the earliest I can remember being interested in pursuing a career in art. I really admire the detail and shading that artists put into things like character art. When I discovered 3d-modelling it was SO cool. Just the fact that we can actually build whatever we wish from scratch.
Originally, I wanted to create video games. So I studied briefly at the University of Advancing Technology learning game design, before moving to New Zealand and studying game design at Victoria. One of the courses was 3D Modelling and Animation, which I quickly fell in love with. From that one class alone, I went from focusing my time solely on game design, to focusing most of my time to 3D art with game design becoming a secondary focus.
Ever since I was old enough to flip through pages of picture books and clumsily pick up a gaming controller I was hooked on the words and world's we can be transported to through art and design. My desire to create and share stories has defined my path up to choosing a computer graphics degree and visual VFX to aid my career as a digital artist and developer.
I joined a video making competition at the end of elementary school so I could hang out with a friend after graduation. I have enjoyed every bit of the production process and wanted more so I joined a video production club in secondary school. After that, I had spent some time in the Events Management industry that became my introduction to the creative industries.
I've always liked creating stories and characters; watching movies like LotR and Harry Potter made me want to recreate the magic that I experienced when I first watched those films. Playing video games since a young age helped fuel my interest in creative media along with the constant interest in drawing.
My last year of high school, I never saw working in the games or film industry as a realistic career path even though that's where my interests lay. I had prepared myself for architecture. However upon going to the V.U.W open day and seeing what paths were on offer I made a last minute change to my future.
I have been an active visual artist my whole life. Over the last few years I have come to the realisation that collaborative projects are the ones I find most rewarding. Producing art installations in live environments has led me to appreciate creativity in the moment. I am primarily motivated by enjoyment of process. I find the process of of production at least as rewarding as enjoying the results.
